BRITISH IMMIGRATION AND VISA REQUIREMENTS
INFORMATION ABOUT ADMISSION TO THE UNITED KINGDOM FOR EMPLOYMENT OR AS A DEPENDENT OF SOMEONE COMING FOR EMPLOYMENT
WORK PERMITS
Work permits are issued by the Department of Employment. A work permit relates to a specific individual and a particular job. Regular work permits are only issued for jobs involving a high level of skill and experience for which no resident labour is available in the United Kingdom or elsewhere in the European Union. Permits may, however, be issued to enable overseas nationals to come to the United Kingdom for training or work experience.
You cannot apply for a work permit. This has to be done on your behalf by an employer in the United Kingdom who wants to employ you. The employer should obtain an application form from, and should apply to:
Overseas Labour Section
Department for Education and Employment
Level 5,
Moorfoot
Sheffield,
S1 4PQ
Tel: 0114 259 4074
You should not travel to the United Kingdom to start work before you have received the permit. If you arrive in the United Kingdom without a work permit to take up a job which requires a work permit, you will be refused admission. You will need a visa in addition to your work permit. You will need to have your work permit to show to the entry clearance officer before a visa can be issued. From receipt of a work permit application, it takes approximately 4 - 5 weeks to process.
HOW TO APPLY FOR AN ENTRY CLEARANCE
You must fill in application forms IM2A and (except in the case of dependants) IM2C, which you can get free of charge from the nearest British Mission offering a visa service:
- 2 recent passport-sized photographs
- the visa fee
- valid passport
- other documents, evidence or information referred to above under the category in which you are applying to the British Mission.
You may have to attend an interview. Fees must
be paid in local currency: you should not send cash through the
post, but bank drafts, postal or money orders payable to the Mission
may be enclosed. You need to submit documents for a business visa
(work permit) between 1.30pm and 3.30pm.
DEPENDANTS OF ALL CATEGORIES
The spouse and children under 18 of someone who is admitted to the United Kingdom as a work permit holder, or in one of the categories of employment for which a work permit is not required, may be admitted to the United Kingdom with them if they have an entry clearance for this purpose. To apply for entry clearance, dependants should fill in form IM2A. They will have to show that there will be adequate accommodation in the United Kingdom for them, and that they will be adequately maintained, without recourse to public funds. If their spouse/parent is already in the United Kingdom, it will be helpful if they can show their spouse/parents admission details when they apply for entry clearance (eg by means of a photocopy of the relevant pages of their spouse/parent's passport).
